After learning of the manufacturing defect, the brand pulled the product and is offering refunds -- while its stock plummets
If you wear Lululemon to yoga class, your downward dog may be revealing your perfect form in more than one way.
The popular athletic wear brand has recalled a style of its black yoga pants after it became clear that the material with which they were made left a bit less to the imagination than wearers had in mind. Why the unplanned sheerness? Lululemon isn't totally sure, but points to an issue in Taiwan manufacturing facilities. “The ingredients, weight and longevity qualities of the women’s black Luon bottoms remain the same but the coverage does not, resulting in a level of sheerness in some of our women’s black Luon bottoms that fall short of our very high standards," the brand posted in an FAQ section to address the issue on its Web site.
Lululemon will offer full refunds to customers — but expect an imminent shortage going forward: The recalled items make up 17 percent of the brand's women’s pants. "We are also exploring all opportunities to increase inventory levels as quickly as possible, so long as our standards are met," the brand meditated on its website.
Think it's all a bit of harmless fun? Lululemon doesn't — because its bottom line, so to speak, is taking a big hit. Its shares plunged close to eight percent before Tuesday's opening bell. The company has lowered its expectations from an 11 percent increase in same-store sales to just 5 to 8 percent in the first quarter. And instead of revenue between $350 million and $355 million for its first fiscal quarter, it's expecting to bring in $333 million to $343 million. We suspect those new numbers will hardly make for zen boardroom discussions.
Lululemon fans among our readers will please pardon the brand being the butt of so many gratuitous puns — but we couldn't help but make a few (ahem) cracks in reporting this story.
